Leo at 8 Months!

Leo continues to figure out new ways to explore his world as he has hit his eight month mark. He officially can never be left alone and unrestrained - what he does may not always meet all the requirements of "crawling", but he's gotten very good at setting destination goals and achieving them, even if those goals are not always on the same vertical plane that he begins on. On the downside, his first two teeth started coming in this month, which led to some of the toughest nights for him (and us) since the first couple of months at home.

Hair: Developing an undergrowth of hair for a layered look. Also seems to be stickier and clumpier, but that relates to the increase in hand-held foods.

Eyes: Maybe settling into a brownish gray? The tone seems to depend on the ambient light.

Likes: Leo continues to love to eat, listen to music, and tickles! He loves Remote, Octopus, and Phone. Still putting everything and anything into his mouth!  He's definitely enjoying the moving around, but he's starting to get more frustrated that he can't pull up.  We expect to see that pretty soon!

Dislikes: New teeth are definitely not on his list of favorites and he seems to be noticing when we walk away from him more(especially if he is hungry or not feeling well in the first place).

What's New:

Eating: Leo is eating more and more finger foods which is very exciting.  We introduced Cheerios, pancakes, sweet potato chunks, honey dew, and CHEESE this month!  He definitely prefers the finger foods, but will still eat purees.  He's getting much better at grabbing food and then opening his fist to put it into his mouth.  Still working on the pincer grip - not quite a crab yet!

Movement: Yes, Leo is on the move!  He's crawling slowly but surely across the floor with only a few belly flops in between. He'll only crawl if we put something especially exciting in front of him.  He can stand up when he's holding on to something, but he can't quite pull up on his own yet.

Language: Leo is "talking" all the time now - lots of consonants, mama, dada, and b's. No idea what any of it means, obvi, but exciting nonetheless!

Dana's Birth Story: Part 1

Dana is three   seven ! months old and it is SO hard to believe how speedily these last 12   28 weeks have gone by.  It is such a joy to have her here, and she is the sprinkles  on what was already quite the delicious cupcake of a family.  Both being from families of three kids, we had planned on having three kids from the beginning.  There was some negotiations along the way, especially since having three kids in the suburbs is VERY different from having three kids in the city, but one of us finally convinced the other to GO THE DISTANCE and here we are. This birth story actually starts with Seth's birth story.  I had placenta previa with Seth which led to a very scary hemorrhage situation, but luckily we both escaped relatively unscathed except for a lot of anxiety with a side of PTSD on my part and a strong stubborn streak on Seth's part.  When I consulted with my OB before getting pregnant this time, I was told that there was like a 3.875%...

Dana's Birth Story: Part 2

When we last left off, I had just been told that I might want to abort the pregnancy due to suspected placenta accreta. Hot times! Pregnant in the background! There are many  things I do not like about living in a large city. Noise. Lack of open fields of wildflowers. The smell of garbage in the summer.  However, lack of access to medical care is not one of these problems.  After doing some frantic googling, I decided that I would consult a high risk OB/GYN to see what they had to say about my hungry placenta. I scheduled an appointment for a second opinion for which I had to wait a week. What a long week that was!  The doctor that I was referred to was a balding Israeli who I had to work really hard to make laugh (always my goal in any medical appointment). Upon reviewing my ultrasound, he said he was not even sure I had placenta accreta and that even if I did have it, there were measures that could be taken to prevent the worst case scenario.  ...

How to Get a Toddler to Love You: Leo Edition

I have to say, it feels pretty great to be one of your kid's go-to people.  I always wanted to be a parent and have my kid come to me instead of someone else when they are sad or hurt or want a banana and, yay!, now my dream has come true and I'm one of a few select people who Leo seeks out.  That being said, everyone should be able to experience the joy that is Leo when he feels really comfortable with you.  So, for those of you who don't have the privilege of spending all your time with this kid, I thought I would write a bit about how to be a rock star in Leo's world so that when you come over for a playdate (and I take a nap), you'll be ready to go.  First, when you come in, it's totally awesome to say hi to Leo, but don't be offended or hurt if he doesn't respond. He's just playing hard to get. So, just toss off a "Hey, Leo" and then... Second, wait and see what he does.  The best way to get a toddler to respond to you is to r...
